optane

Intel Optane was a product brand spanning storage and persistent-memory devices. Products based on the 3D XPoint medium appeared in different physical and software forms. An Optane SSD used a storage interface, while persistent-memory modules occupied a different position in the system. The brand alone therefore cannot specify latency, capacity, compatibility, or access semantics.

An SSD presents storage operations through a controller and I/O path. The host submits commands and transfers data through a defined interface, with firmware and error management between software and the medium. Its end-to-end behavior includes queueing and protocol overhead. A fast underlying cell does not remove those system-level costs.

Optane persistent memory supported different operating modes on qualified platforms. Intel’s documentation distinguishes Memory Mode from App Direct. In Memory Mode, DRAM serves as a cache for a larger memory capacity; in App Direct, software can access separately exposed persistent resources. The mode determines what the operating system and application actually see.

Persistent media requires a deliberate durability model. Applications must account for when writes become durable and how metadata remains consistent after interruption. Processor caches and ordering rules are part of that problem. Nonvolatile cells do not automatically make every ordinary memory update crash-consistent or every application data structure recoverable.

The product history includes a later business wind-down. Intel’s 2022 annual report explicitly records winding down Optane that year. A historical glossary should therefore explain the technology and operating modes without presenting the family as a newly expanding product roadmap. The durable lesson is the coordination required among media, platform hardware, operating systems, and application design.
