# NAND Filmstack

A NAND filmstack is the ordered multilayer structure used to form the flash array. In one common replacement-gate approach, an initial oxide/sacrificial-nitride stack becomes an oxide/gate stack after selective removal and gate formation.

## Two views of the same integration

The starting stack may alternate insulating spacers and sacrificial layers. Later, selected sacrificial material is removed through access structures and the resulting spaces are used for gate formation. The initial and final stack should therefore be drawn separately.

## The hole is a geometry challenge

A channel opening must traverse the stack while maintaining usable width and shape. Bowing, taper and depth variation can make later film deposition and channel formation difficult. More layers increase the distance that etch species and reaction products must travel.

## The local cell stack is different

Oxide/nitride repeats along the array height are not the same drawing as tunnel dielectric, charge trap and blocking dielectric around the channel. One describes repeated device levels; the other describes a local cell's radial materials.

## Integration varies

Deck construction, layer count, gate materials and processing order depend on the manufacturer and generation. This diagram explains a common structural idea rather than a particular product.
