intel-14a

An Intel development platform in the angstrom roadmap. Intel 14A is an advanced process platform that follows Intel 18A in the company’s published technology roadmap. Intel describes it using RibbonFET 2 gate-all-around transistors and PowerDirect backside power delivery. The number is a platform identifier rather than a physical gate-length specification. It must also be distinguished from TSMC’s separately defined A14 technology despite the similarity of the names.

RibbonFET 2 and PowerDirect address different constraints. Gate-all-around devices improve the gate’s control of thin semiconductor channels. Backside power delivery changes the path by which supply current reaches those devices and can reduce competition between power and signal wiring. Combining the two requires careful integration of devices, contacts, wafer processing, and interconnects. Improvements depend on the complete implementation, rather than the presence of either brand name alone.

High-NA EUV is part of the development program. Intel’s 2025 annual report, filed in 2026, identifies high-numerical-aperture EUV lithography as a manufacturing technology being pursued in the development of 14A. Higher NA can resolve tighter features, but a process still needs suitable resists, masks, metrology, pattern transfer, and defect control. Tool installation and patterned test structures do not by themselves establish qualified high-volume product manufacturing.

Vendor projections require their baseline. Intel’s process page publishes prospective power, performance, and density comparisons against 18A under stated conditions. Such figures are platform claims, rather than independent benchmarks of two shipping processors. Product results also depend on architecture, libraries, voltage, utilization, SRAM content, and package. A responsible comparison preserves the stated baseline and avoids treating every advertised benefit as simultaneously achievable.

Development status should remain dated. The cited annual report discusses continuing development and the substantial investment required for advanced nodes. A development roadmap, design-enablement release, customer commitment, and volume-production announcement provide different evidence. This entry treats 14A as a development platform described by those sources; it does not turn a projected launch year or technical disclosure into a claim that broad customer production has already occurred.
