FinFET design considerations

FinFET design considerations center on fin width, fin height, and fin pitch, since fin width must be made thin enough for the wraparound gate to fully deplete the fin's channel region, while fin height and the number of parallel fins per transistor together set the total effective channel width and resulting drive current. Unlike a planar transistor's channel width, which can be set to essentially any continuous value, FinFET channel width is effectively quantized to come in discrete increments determined by the fixed fin height and the number of fins used, a design constraint planar transistors did not impose.
