fabless-boom
The fabless boom describes the expansion of chip-design companies that outsourced wafer fabrication. The model separates product design from ownership of a semiconductor fab. It does not mean that a chip company avoids manufacturing responsibilities altogether: it still needs process access, production planning, qualification, test, packaging, and dependable suppliers.
Dedicated foundries made that separation more practical. TSMC’s historical company account identifies its founding in 1987 as a dedicated independent manufacturing foundry. UMC’s timeline records a move toward a pure-play foundry model in 1995. These are concrete institutional milestones behind the broader growth of design-focused semiconductor businesses.
Reusable design infrastructure lowered some barriers while leaving others intact. Process design kits, libraries, IP blocks, and electronic-design-automation tools help translate a circuit into a manufacturable layout. They reduce the need for every company to reinvent every component. Verification, physical implementation, and product differentiation remain substantial engineering work.
The economics shift rather than disappear. A fabless firm avoids owning the entire wafer-fabrication infrastructure, but pays for masks, engineering, wafers, assembly, test, and inventory. It also depends on external capacity and process availability. Calling the model capital-light in one respect should not be confused with calling advanced chip development inexpensive or risk-free.
The historical boom joined organizational specialization with growing application demand. Communications, consumer electronics, graphics, and other markets created opportunities for differentiated designs. Avoid explaining every company’s success with one factor or claiming a universal market-share figure without a dated source. The useful story is how design and manufacturing became separable enough to support a wider range of chip businesses.
