3-3-volt-logic
3.3-volt logic describes circuits or interfaces associated with a nominal 3.3 V supply. The phrase does not specify a single set of input thresholds. LVTTL and LVCMOS can both occur in 3.3 V systems while using different threshold conventions. A connection is valid only when the actual driver and receiver specifications are compatible.
The input high threshold is not the nominal supply voltage. A receiver recognizes a high state above its specified minimum high input level and a low state below its maximum low input level. The driver guarantees output levels under stated loading conditions. Compare those limits directly rather than assuming that matching supply labels guarantee noise margin.
A lower-voltage input is not automatically tolerant of a higher-voltage driver. Some device families provide tolerant inputs, but the property must be documented for the exact device and supply condition. The ordinary operating range and absolute maximum ratings answer different questions. An interface can pass a logical threshold check yet still violate an electrical rating.
The 3.3 V transition belongs to a broader mixed-voltage system story. A board can contain older 5 V interfaces alongside lower-voltage logic, requiring translation or specifically compatible parts. TI’s low-voltage CMOS guide discusses such cases, while Microchip documents LVTTL as a general-purpose 3.3 V interface standard. Neither statement makes all 3.3 V pins interchangeable.
Describe the interface with its family and loading assumptions. For a meaningful specification, include the supply range, guaranteed input/output levels, drive conditions, and power-sequencing behavior. In a historical article, distinguish the chip’s core rail from its external signaling rail. That avoids assigning one voltage to an entire system that actually used several domains.
